This is an all-original and uncommon WW2 Oyster Commander military watch produced by the Rolex watch company in 1942. The gold-filled case is quite clean for its age. The ref. 3478 case back is correct. The original Oyster-patented winding crown is still functioning. The caliber 59 movement (all original and signed Rolex under the dial) is keeping time very well after a recent cleaning and overhaul. The original dial is spectacular being two-toned with Arabic numerals, red 24-hour scale, pencil hands, and sub-seconds with curved print above. These 29.5mm Oyster watches are small in size and probably designed to avoid damage during battle. They were designed and sold to Canadian soldiers going overseas in WW2. This is a wonderful example that is all original except the perfect, vintage-looking, stitched, new leather band that compliments the watch quite nicely. These vintage military Oyster watches are becoming very hard to find in original condition, especially as fine as this example.
