Description
This is a rare and completely original Gallet Commander mid-sized chronograph. This particular model was made famous, as it was worn by a WW2-era prisoner, Second Lieutenant, James Richard Hoel who escaped from Stalag Luft III, a German prisoner-of-war camp. This model came to life again in the movie “The Great Escape” starring Steve McQueen. This particular Gallet was demure in stature for those soldiers seeking a smaller watch. This particular watch was also adopted by many ladies seeking a chronograph in WW2. The stainless steel case measures 30mm across, 35mm lug to lug, and 11.8mm thick. The overall condition of the case is stellar. This dial is sublime! The original black dial with lighter telemeter scale and original hands looks deep black in real life. The oval, Excelsior Park 42 movement is quite unique in itself and was created in house. It truly is incredible how this entire watch has survived intact so well. We rarely see these watches appear, and this exotic dial is quite special.
